About SDCYB

A bit about our rich history, our mission and what we value the most.

Founded in 1945, San Diego Civic Youth Ballet (SDCYB) has been the resident classical ballet school in Balboa Park for almost 80 years - offering affordable, year-round, high-quality classes and productions for dancers ages 4 to adult in the beautiful Casa del Prado.  The organization provides over 500 students with daily ballet classes, produces ballet productions for over 20,000 patrons each year, teaches over 500 students offsite through the Outreach Program, and continues to operate in good financial health with a dedicated staff of full-time and part-time employees, as well as over 200 volunteers.

Each year, four major productions grace the Casa del Prado Theater stage including a full-length spring ballet, an annual school-wide Spring Showcase, Fairy Tales in the Park (benefiting SDCYB’s Scholarship Program), and the beloved family holiday tradition, The Nutcracker.  SDCYB offers ballet camps and intensives each summer and has offered the “Ballet for Me!” class for students with disabilities since 2015.  Relationships with school groups and Scout troops continue to develop through discounted tickets to ballet performances.

San Diego Civic Youth Ballet is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Mission

To provide the youth of San Diego with an opportunity to study, understand and appreciate, through education and participation, the art of ballet, and to enrich the cultural life of the community.

Vision

SDCYB strives to create an inclusive environment where every child can build resilience and confidence through dance.

Values

  • Caring & Supportive: We are dedicated to the growth of our dancers and staff. By prioritizing care and support, we create an environment where individuals can thrive both personally and professionally.
  • Inclusion & Welcoming: We celebrate each dancer's unique talents, backgrounds, identities, and abilities, cultivating an environment where everyone feels welcomed, appreciated, and empowered. From the classroom to the stage, we break down barriers, ensuring every dancer has equal opportunity for creative expression.
  • Opportunity & Access: At the core of our vision is expanding access to transformative opportunities, emphasizing creativity, artistry, and technique across dance disciplines to foster a strong foundation for dancers.
  • Community & Collaboration: By fostering collaboration among dancers, staff, board, and community, we unite diverse talents and perspectives toward our shared mission and goals. Together, our dedication and teamwork propel us toward realizing our aspirations.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility

SDCYB strives to create and maintain an inclusive organization where everyone feels welcome and valued.  We want to be innovative and productive as we deliver programming to our constituency, and attention to diversity and inclusion strategies will only make us stronger.  The more we collaborate and value everyone's differences, the closer we get to achieving a truly inclusive community.  Prioritizing a diversity and inclusion strategy creates an inclusive culture which offers a sense of belonging to all our dancers.
