Ballet for the Classroom
Since 2003, the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet has supported a vibrant Outreach Program which brings the art of ballet to the San Diego public school system. Our Outreach Program currently serves over 750 children per year through year-long classes at local elementary schools as well as weekly classes at our studios through “School in the Park,” a Balboa Park collaborative learning experience for local school-children.
The program provides weekly classical ballet instruction free of charge to both the schools and students. Additionally, students are invited to participate in the Student Outreach Showcase each May. The students perform pieces learned during their SDCYB Outreach dance classes throughout the semester, and the performance is held at the Casa del Prado Theater in Balboa Park. Family, friends, and neighbors are all invited to attend this performance at no cost.
This performance features professional costumes, lighting, direction, and staging, giving students the opportunity to experience the thrill of performing on stage for an audience. A selection of works performed by SDCYB’s advanced dancers completes this show and gives students a chance to interact with student role models backstage.
The goal of this program is to bring ballet to those who might not otherwise be exposed to this exciting art form, and encourage all students to move, dance, and perform!
For students who excel in the in-classroom Outreach Program throughout the year and wish to continue their ballet education, SDCYB offers an Outreach Scholarship Program. Students are asked to apply for this merit-based scholarship each year, and upon being accepted, they will have the opportunity to enroll in a tuition-waved, 8-week summer ballet class in SDCYB’s Balboa Park studios taught by the Artistic Director, as well as a stipend for the appropriate uniform.
SDCYB currently serves the following local schools:
- Cadman Elementary School
- Epiphany Prep Charter School
- Franklin Elementary School
- Fulton Elementary School
- Garfield Elementary School
- Golden Hill Elementary
- Hawthorne Elementary
